We asked Michael to build a large first storey extension on our Victorian house, in order to create a new en suite and to substantially increase the size of the family bathroom - a big and awkward project, with the added constraint of being in a conservation area. We committed the cardinal sin of not asking anyone else to quote for the job, since if Michael hadn't come in within budget, we probably wouldn’t have had the work done. At the start, we told him that we didn't want the extension to look like an extension; Michael promised it wouldn't and it doesn't.

Reclaimed materials were used, the ornamental brickwork and the decorative lintels on the main house have been replicated, and the work has been carried out to the highest standard. Every one of Michael's men is a craftsman in his own right, who takes an enormous pride not only in his own work, but in the work of the rest of the team; in consequence, we had total confidence at every stage of the process.

We are thrilled with the finished product, and the numerous visitors who have seen the bathrooms are palpably impressed. Michael’s approach is characterised by professionalism, his commitment to quality, a top-quality workforce, a perfectionist’s eye and a reassuring ‘can-do’ attitude; as a result, a difficult building project was completed to our complete satisfaction. In short, we would recommend Michael without reservation and indeed, will have him back to do some further projects this year.

We love our house but the downstairs layout of this Victorian semi has never really worked for our family. We wanted to make the most of the space and the south facing garden and all be in it together. I had some ideas but I needed help to realise them. I have to be honest - I had three quotes but I knew immediately that Mick was the one who could, and would, do what I wanted. He really listened and came up with some great ideas based on his experience of similar houses and projects.

It was a big job - a 20 week build without kitchen or water downstairs - and a lot of money! I can honestly say though that Mick's team did absolutely everything they could to make life as simple, clean, and comfortable for us throughout the whole job. The lads were kind, polite and unendingly helpful. We hit a couple of hiccups - only natural in such a relatively complicated project - but they were resolved remarkably quickly and always in good faith.

The project came in on time and on budget and any snagging we have had since has been done quickly and without question.

As for the result - it is absolutely fantastic. It has totally changed the way we live as a family and it is really beautiful. It is in fact just as I imagined it - we really couldn't have hoped for anything better.

Michael and his team did a fantastic job  on renovating our bathroom.  The process was easy, from talking with Michael about ideas and the initial quote to agreeing the finishing touches;  there was good communication and the hitches and changes (which are inevitable in any building work) were all sorted out quickly.  The work was done to a very high standard – each person in the team is skilled in a particular area (i.e. carpenter/electrics/plumbing etc), and we were impressed with their work rate, politeness and enthusiasm.  There was a very good attention to the finish – and time was taken to achieve this.  The team were tidy and respectful of our space too.  We’ve renovated a couple of older type houses – so have a quite a lot of experience of building companies.  This was by far our best experience to date.  We would recommend without hesitation.

"We love our house and having major works done on it was something that we had to think about long and hard. In particular, it was very important to us that the new build was done in a way that was entirely sympathetic to the character of the 1878 original. This meant finding a builder who was not only technically competent but also who had a real “eye” , who understood proportion, detail and line... and who was not prepared to compromise on quality. And in addition , because the works were in part to make the house more accessible for a disabled person , it really mattered that we found a builder who understood that and who was prepared to go the extra mile to make it possible for us to live amongst the works! In Michael Laffoley and his great team we found all that.

We know from past experience and from the experience of friends that builders can be a nightmare of unreliability , cut corners and poor business practice. We can honestly say, however,  that having Mick and his team on site was a pleasure , that everything went to plan , that everyone was extremely friendly and helpful , that the work was done to a very high standard. On the odd occasion when something wasn’t quite right it was corrected immediately and with zeal. Mick also brought ideas for how to improve the design and worked with us at all times.

If you are serious about your house and want work of the highest quality then I recommend Michael Laffoley without reservation and with real enthusiasm"

"We ate in the room for the first time this weekend.  It's fantastic.  Its transformed the house and the way we feel about it.  The sky lights and the sides were genius."

"I've been impressed and inspired by your project management, professionalism, charm and customer care.  You could teach our folk in the office a good few things and indeed you do but through my story telling!"

"We think they (the team) were all fantastic."

Dear Michael

We just wanted to say thank you to you and the lads for the great work done over the last 9 months at the house. The end product is a good as you promised and the journey has been a pleasure!

We've had a lot on in the last year with my work and the second baby so it was very reassuring to know that you were dealing with all the different trades and could bring in quality people as needed. It was quite a relief that I didnt have to worry about the details or organise everything. Your team was great - very hard working. I was also pleased that we didnt upset the neighbours during this time - she said the builders were very polite and tidy!

We've recommended you to a few friends in the area already and no doubt when we have our house warming party when we ve finally unpacked our boxes you ll be getting a few more calls for new business!

Kind regards

Mick and the team - recommended without hesitation. High quality workmanship and work that is sympathetic to period properties. Each individual tradesman that worked on our kitchen extension were skilled in what they did, professional, courteous and cleaned up after themselves.

Mick gave honest opinions and ideas and when problems arose (as they do in building projects) they were quickly resolved. We've ended up with a stunning extension to our living space. All delivered with wit and charm!

We can thoroughly recommend Michael Laffoley and his experienced team on any project you may have in mind where technical understanding and quality of craftsmanship are required. Michael is currently creating a beautiful kitchen / living room extension that is sympathetic to our Victorian home in Moseley. Michael has the rare ability to both listen and advise in equal measure, co-ordinate all aspects of the project with little fuss and is timely with deadlines. I (Alan) certainly wish some of the hospitals I have worked in over the years were run as well as Michael runs his bespoke building company!
